Chrysanthemum X Morifolium :

Chrysanthemum X morifolium is the name for the common garden mum, also known as Dendranthema X grandiflorum or the "Queen of Autumn." Often used in potted or cut flower arrangements for Mother's Day, Easter and other holidays, these mums can be grown as perennials in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10A. Mums are relatively easy to grow, long flowering and available in a wide variety of blossom colors. The name chrysanthemum, which derives from two Greek terms and means “golden flower," is from the Asteraceae family. Records of cultivation of mum plants date back 2,000 years in China, and the plant has also served as Japan's national flower for centuries. Mum growing eventually spread to England, and the flowers were brought into the U.S. from that country around 1800. Today, mums are the second most potted plant produced in the U.S. each year, according to the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service.
